I am 29 years old. I have been blind from birth.
At 6 months old I went to Scartho road handicapped
centre. When I was 7, I went to a boarding school
called Rushden Hall school in Northampton, and I
was very homesick, as I had never been away from home before.
My Colleges:
When I was 11 years old I went to Hengehols College in Harrogate and I was there until I was 18. Next I went to Hull College until I was 24. When I finished Hull College, I transferred to Grimsby College. When I was 28 years old I decided to leave Grimsby College as there was nothing for me to do.
Discovering Foresight:
One day I was listening to Sound Scene which is a talking newspaper, and they mentioned Foresight, and it sounded just what I needed.
So, about 6 months ago I went to Foresight and a whole new world opened up for me. I have been to many other organisations in the past and Foresight is the only one that does social, as well as training for my age group.
Tenpin Bowling:
I became involved in some of the many activities that take place. I particularly enjoy tenpin bowling at Cleethorpes bowling centre, with the help of one of the volunteers from Foresight called Denise Woolard.
I mustn't forget the excellent pub lunches and also Jan Lewis's very enjoyable pub quiz.
TSB. Help Line:
Then with the help and dedication from Val Winn and Paul Silvester and funding from the Lloyds TSB Foundation, the Help Line was formed. The Help Line gives help and advice to all of the visually impaired people in the whole of the UK. We are one of the places that offers this service in the UK.
Volunteer:
I was asked to work as a volunteer on the help Line and my main job is to answer the telephone. This has been a wonderful opportunity for me. I have met, and work with a lot of lovely dedicated volunteers.
If you would like the opportunity to work as a volunteer on the Help Line, please contact Foresight on 01472 269666 or call into the office, where you will be made most welcome.
